THE HERO TRILOGY (Chasing Odysseus, Trying War, The Blood of Wolves) by S. D. Gentill

Greek Mythology re-told through youthful eyes

The HERO Trilogy by Sulari Gentill  is currently part of an ongoing global research project, “Our Mythical Childhood,” recently awarded a 1.49 million euro multi-nation grant by the European Research Council.  An Australian viewpoint is being offered by local YA expert Professor Elizabeth Hale, who states the project examines “the eruption of ancient themes into our supposedly rational age”.

Prof. Hale’s essay Feminist Medusas and outback Minotaurs – why myth is big in children’s books can be accessed online at The Conversation.

In this essay, Prof. Hales states “we might think that Medusa and the Minotaur are buried in the past. But they surface in the present surprisingly often: testing our bravery; challenging our ideas about monstrosity and danger; and revealing the continued influence of classical antiquity, and its power in literature for our young readers.”

Sulari  believes “there’s a strange familiarity to them even if one has never heard the particular legend before. They add to our appreciation of new stories and we feel a connection even if we don’t know why.”
