The LoveOzYA committee was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Australian author Steph Bowe.

Steph’s talent was surpassed only by the size of her heart and her unwavering compassion for her fellow humans. We had an inkling of that even before she published her first novel, Girl Saves Boy, through the fierce intelligence and rare emotional openness she brought to her well-loved blog Hey! Teenager of the Year.

And more than just the gift of her writing, Steph gave an endless supply of positivity and passion for #LoveOzYA. She understood that this is more than just a hashtag, it’s a community and she never stopped contributing to it. She was an endless booster of her fellow authors, a thoughtful and loving campaigner for diversity in our literature and one of the best advocates for the amazingness of young people we’ve ever had.

It is unspeakably awful to lose Steph at such a young age, but it is testament to her talent that she already had three successful novels published by the time she was 23. We will be celebrating her life with a re-read of her books – Girl Saves Boy, All This Could End and Night Swimming – and invite you to join us.

We offer our heartfelt condolences and love to Steph’s family.

Vale, Steph, with love and gratitude.
